One Day
At first, I was hesitant to watch this series after having seen the 2011 movie adaptation. Remakes are not usually my cup of tea, but the idea of a more detailed version of one of my favourite stories intrigued me enough to give it a shot.
Without giving away any spoilers, "One Day" revolves around the lives of Dexter and Emma, two people whose chance encounter one day sparks a connection which marks the start of beautiful journey. Their story unfolds over the years as they evolve from strangers to best friends, navigating the challenges of life while battling with the spark between them.
What stands out in "One Day" is the authenticity of Dexter and Emma's relationship. Portrayed brilliantly by the actors, the characters feel very genuine and relatable, each of them having their own flaws, insecurities, and strengths. The show captures the essence of the "right person, wrong time" trope, depicting the never ending struggle of timing versus fate. Their story, which begins on that one day, resonates deeply with the quote from Great Expectations:
"That was a memorable day to me, for it made great changes in me. But, it is the same with any life. Imagine one selected day struck out of it, and think how different its course would have been. Pause you who read this, and think for a moment of the long chain of iron or gold, of thorns or flowers, that would never have bound you, but for the formation of the first link on one memorable day."
It is a reminder of how seemingly insignificant moments can have quite significant impacts on our lives, altering our paths in ways we would have never guessed. The show forces viewers to think about the what-ifs, to imagine those alternate realities shaped by the smallest of changes.
As I watched this show, I found myself reflecting on my own life, thinking about the effects of those important decisions and the paths not taken. "One Day" invites us to embrace the uncertainty of fate and cherish the small moments that can shape our destinies.
